During the month of June, Heart FM Radio ran its 16 Days for Youth campaign, where listeners shared stories about the heroes and heroines within their communities in Cape Town. We wanted to show our appreciation and partnered with Heart FM to salute all those who do great work in the Mitchells Plain community, and paid it forward by gifting the noteworthy recipient.
Meet Gerome Hendricks from Rocklands, Mitchells Plain, voted our Community Hero in the 16 Days for Youth campaign. Gerome is truly helping to #CreateTomorrow by running various outreach programmes with the support of his wife, Charlene, and family.
Throughout lockdown, Gerome noticed a growing need for his feeding scheme to continue and expand. Feeding between 200 – 250 people daily, he encourages many kids who want to drop out of school to remain in, and as a reward they receive a meal. From providing transport for pensioners to hospital for their medical check-ups, to assisting the youth with setting up their CV in their search for job opportunities, Gerome’s dedication to the community, and his faith in their ability to rise, is inspiring.
Gerome was the recipient of a R5 000 Liberty Promenade Gift Card, and he continues to encourage people to believe in their power to rise – always. “You always get a second chance and through it you can change your life. No matter how challenging things may be today, you can still choose to make a difference and change your tomorrow.”
